‘Memories of Mawgan Porth’

March 2018
It’s been a busy time! Finally achieved the dream of owning a croft on the NW coast of Scotland. It’s taken some time to achieve…5 years in fact.
Lots to do renovating the croft house and working on the land ready for my own sheep. Will keep you posted.

Really pleased to receive my first ‘international’ commission. The subject is Porthcurno, a favourite beach of many visitors to Cornwall, and is a Christmas present for a client in Florida.

It arrived safe and sound and when you see how many times it was handled by the courier, it’s a good job It was packed well.

Great idea by Crowan Crafts in St Ives. All Crowan Craft artisans have agreed to decorate plain wooden Christmas Baubles in order to raise money for St Julia’s Hospice in Hayle. This is my little experimentation and contribution…

November 2016

Earlier in 2016, I entered a piece of wool art into Sky Arts Landscape Artist of the Year competition. Unexpectedly, my work was shortlisted and I was invited to be reserve artist for two out of the 6 heats. This was a great privilege bearing in mind who the judges are and the standard of the other competitors. I accepted with the knowledge that if I didn’t make it as one of the main heat artists, I could still take part as a wildcard entrant.
My heats were at Scotney Castle, near Hastings. To be brief, I wasn’t required as a featured artist so I entered as a wildcard. There were 50 other wild cards and the atmosphere was great amongst us. I had a difficult task ahead of me, trying to create a landscape made from wool when everyone else was painting and with only 4 – 6 hours to achieve it. My work received a lot of attention with many interested spectators watching over my shoulder. Unfortunately I didn’t progress any further but the experience was invaluable.
I learnt a great deal from being part of the programme and the preparation helped develop my work significantly. The production team were excellent and I was very well looked after. I met some lovely people including the editor of Artist Magazine, Dr Sally Bulgin, who interviewed me as part of an article that is included in the November edition. Sky Landscape Artist of the Year 2015 series was the best-performing, none-scripted Sky Arts programme ever, so i hope it’s as well received this year.
Congratulations to the finalists and the overall winner Richard Allen.

Lovely visit to the North Pennines where I grew up. The weather was kind enough to allow me to enjoy views like this.

Came home with 4 lovely fleeces. 3 from my Brother-in-Law’s farm and one that had been purchased from Woolfest in Cockermouth. From top left to bottom right – Blue Faced Leicester, Texel, Shetland, Swaledale. The fleece range from fine and soft to dense and harsh. It will be interesting to see how each one can be used.

June 2016

Received a lovely gift of a Portland fleece from a local farm. Looking forward to seeing what I can do with it.
Portland sheep are a small ancient rare breed that at one point were nearly extinct. The lambs are born a foxy red but change to a creamy white as they grow into adulthood.

Privileged to be helping a local farm with their lambing. Here’s one of their Texel spring lambs. Texels are large blocky sheep and are mainly bred for meat, their wool is used for blends in knitwear and clothing as well as carpets.
